TAKING PART
Entry to the competition is free, but to enter the competition, participants must agree to these Rules. The competition is open to all UK residents and anyone whether an amateur or professional film maker or someone working in the film industry or connected professions.
Each person can submit just one video and this entry must be under the author’s name. Anyone else involved in the film (editing, sound etc) can be credited through the video itself.
THE FILMS
The film must be about sailing and the sea and should be a maximum of ten minutes in length including any titles or credits. They may be about a specific location, a particular boat or a particular aspect of sailing or the sea. There are no limitations on the content, so long as it is related to boats and the sea.
The film must not have any inappropriate content, language or imagery (no violence, racist comments, pornographic or personal attacks on people or organisations, etc.) and the organisers reserve the right to refuse any entry on the basis of its content.
Music and soundtracks must all be copyright free.
If the subject or content of a film includes children under the age of 18, the author may be asked to provide a written release from the parent or legal guardian of the minor.
SUBMITTING THE FILMS
The authors of the films are requested to fill in the form on the website and to send their film in MP4 format via WeTransfer to the email address films@maritimefilmfestival.co.uk.
The deadline for entry to ensure that the film is available to the judges is midnight on December 19th 2019.
The quality of the video must be no more than 1080 p HD. The size of the video must be no more than 400 MB.
COPYRIGHT & PERMISSIONS
The authors must own all rights on their videos to enter the contest. They will be asked to confirm this on the entry form on the website (www.maritimefilmfestival.co.uk).
By entering, the author gives the film festival organisers the right to use the video on the Maritime Film Festival website and YouTube page and to share it as appropriate via other social media.
The films will not in any way be sold or exchanged for services or goods.
The name of the authors and copyright will always be associated with their films.
JUDGING OF THE FILMS
The jury will be drawn together by the event organisers and they will meet between December 20th and the start of the film festival on January 17th to judge the films. The films will be judged according to the following criteria. Each criterion will count equally towards the final score and within the criterion will be awarded a value between 0 and 10 under each main heading (shown in bold below):
- Quality of the production
- Cinematography
- Editing
- Music, audio and sound effects
- Originality and creativity
- Does the film use imaginative and creative ways to convey the theme?
- Does the film display innovative ideas or techniques to convey its theme?
- Engagement
- To what extent does this film stimulate thoughts and ideas?
- Does the film provoke a emotional response?
AWARDS
The winning films of the 2020 Maritime Film Festival will be announced during the closing session of the festival on Sunday 19th January.
